Normally during Math time in the mornings, I have four stations set up, one of which is working in small groups with me on various skills. I decided that every Friday, we would take a break from our routine to do a whole-class project/lesson. Since we have been working on multiplication all week, I wanted to have a project that focused on that skill.
I gave each student a piece of black construction paper for the background and yellow for the windows. They got to pick one color for the buildings that they could trade with classmates for more colors. This management worked well because every student got the colors they wanted and I didn't end up with a bunch of wasted scraps.
The students first made buildings for their skyline. Then they made windows. I had to show them to cut out a large rectangle and then cut it apart. Before that, they were cutting one square at a time from their giant page and it was making a mess along with them having uneven windows. Then they completed the page that goes along with it describing their city and the multiplication arrays represented in each building. Here is my teacher sample.
