Today, the students built their boats. I began by telling them how we will be testing tomorrow and then how they will construct their boats today. All information about the lab is below.
Testing:
Each boat must hold a square tupperware bowl on top. Pennies will be dropped slowly into the bowl until the boat sinks in the water. Sinking is defined as water coming over the top of the boat so that water touches the outside of the tupperware bowl OR the boat resting on the bottom of the testing bucket.
With the $1, students were able to decide as a group what extra materials they wanted to buy. I made a pricing sheet on the whiteboard. As you can see, duct tape was a precious commodity that most groups spent at least some of their money on. The other student favorite was an extra cup. The gallery below shows a few student boats. |
