- Have you tested your tower with the marshmallow on top yet?
- Is one spaghetti string strong enough to hold that marshmallow?
- Is there a way to hold it up from the direction it is leaning?
- Think about the design of some tall towers or buildings you have seen before...
Today's challenge was to build the tallest tower possible that could still hold a marshmallow at the top. Many students did well on their own, while there were a few groups that I had to ask probing questions, like the ones listed below, to help guide their thinking. I gave students 2 minutes to think and plan with their group as I passed out materials. They then had 14 minutes to construct their tower. I counted down from 10 seconds left, and students had to put hands in the air to show me they weren't holding up their tower as I measured. I used a yardstick to go around to each group to measure from the tabletop to the top of the marshmallow. Prompts to guide student thinking:
